We investigated the natural products chemistry and feeding deterrent effects of brominated sesquiterpenes produced by Pacific collections of the calcareous tropical green algaNeomeris annulata. Assays conducted with whole algae showed thatN. annulata was not susceptible to grazing by natural populations of herbivorous fishes on Guam. Crude extracts and column chromatography fractions containing the brominated sesquiterpenes deterred feeding by herbivorous fishes at natural concentrations in field assays on Guam. Two majorN. annulata sesquiterpenes isolated from Guam collections and three related sesquiterpenes previously reported from Bermuda all deterred fish feeding at the high end of their natural concentration ranges, with the exception of one metabolite from Bermuda collections of the alga that differed structurally from the other compounds. The results support our hypothesis that the compounds produced byNeomeris function as chemical defenses against herbivores. The alga produces both structural defenses (CaCO3 in the form of aragonite) and secondary metabolites that defend against herbivory by reef fishes.  相似文献

The photocatalytic behavior of different TiO2-based photocatalysts was reported for gas-phase toluene removal under both UV and visible light illumination, and compared to that of commercial P25 (Degussa) TiO2. Promotion by sulfates and the use of nanosized anatase TiO2 were reported to strongly increase the toluene removal efficiency under UV illumination. Nanosized-anatase was prepared by a protecting group sol–gel synthesis using hexamethyldisilazane as crystallite growth inhibitor. Sulfates played a double positive role, with photogenerated electrons transfer effects limiting charge recombination and as repulsive species for strongly adsorbed aromatic intermediates that act as poisons. The decrease in particle size obtained on nanosized anatase TiO2 (5 nm) yielded a considerable enhancement in the toluene removal efficiency. Pure high surface area rutile has been synthesized at low temperature by a polyethylenglycol-containing sol–gel method for visible light activation purposes. A two-way semiconductor coupling phenomenon, consisting of a reciprocal electron/hole transfer between two visible light-activated oxides, rutile TiO2 and WO3, was proposed to explain the large gain in efficiency when adding low amounts of WO3 to rutile TiO2.  相似文献

Detection of oxygen and carbon dioxide is important in the field of chemical and biosensors for atmosphere and biosystem monitoring and fermentation processes. The present study reports on the preparation of zeolite films doped with iron nanoparticles for detection of CO2 and O2 in gas phase. Pure nanosized LTL type zeolite with monomodal particle size distribution loaded with iron (Fe-LTL) was prepared under hydrothermal condition from colloidal precursor suspensions. The zeolite was loaded with iron to different levels by ion exchange. The Fe-LTL suspensions were used for preparation of thin films on silicon wafers via spin coating method. The reduction of the iron in the zeolite films was carried out under H2 flow (50% H2 in Ar) at 300 °C. The presence of iron nanoparticles is proved by in situ ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy. The properties of the films including surface roughness, thickness, porosity, and mechanical stability were studied. In addition, the loading and distribution of iron in the zeolite films were investigated. The Fe-LTL zeolite films were used to detect O2 and CO2 in a concentration dependent mode, followed by IR spectroscopy. The changes in the IR bands at 855 and 642 cm–1 (Fe?O?H and Fe?O bending vibrations) and at 2363 and 2333 cm–1 (CO2 asymmetric stretching) corresponding to the presence of O2 and CO2, respectively, were evaluated. The response to O2 and CO2 was instant, which was attributed to great accessibility of the iron in the nanosized zeolite crystals. The saturation of the Fe-LTL films with CO2 and O2 at each concentration was reached within less than a minute. The Fe-LTL films detected both oxygen and carbon dioxide in contrast, to the pure LTL zeolite film.

This study was performed to investigate the influence of air inlet temperature (AIT) on the microencapsulation of hazelnut oil by spray drying. Encapsulated powders were analyzed for moisture content, powder yield, surface oil, encapsulation efficiency (EE), bulk density, and particle morphology. The obtained results demonstrated that moisture content, surface oil, and bulk density decreased by 37.8, 27.5, and 33%, respectively as AIT increased from 140 to 220°C. However, powder yield and encapsulation efficiency increased considerably with the rise in AIT. Higher EEs of about 75–80% were observed in this study.  相似文献

A novel ceramic processing method, called Horizontal Dip Spin Casting (HDSC), enabled fabrication of tubular ceramic parts with an aligned chopped fiber phase. HDSC was demonstrated using highly loaded aqueous alumina suspensions with >50 vol.% solids loading and ≤5 vol.% water‐soluble polymer employed as a rheological modifier. Chopped carbon fibers were added to the suspensions to attain maximum loadings of 30 vol.%. During forming, cylindrical foam molds were dipped into the suspension while being rotated radially about the long axis. Simultaneously, a doctor blade was placed at a specified distance from the foam surface to facilitate the flow of the suspension to align the fiber and control the thickness of the material that accrued on the mold. Rheological study of alumina‐PVP suspensions with and without chopped carbon fiber showed that the suspensions exhibited a yield‐pseudoplastic flow behavior. The degree of alignment of the carbon fiber phase in the green bodies was characterized for various suspension formulations, carbon fiber contents and forming speeds. Stereological characterization of green body specimens confirmed the effectiveness of HDSC to attain the desired tubular geometry with considerable fiber alignment for a suspension composition containing ≤20 vol.% chopped fibers.  相似文献

Relation of chlorine, copper and sulphur to dioxin emission factors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Dioxin emission factors for different combustion categories range over five orders of magnitude. Both chlorine (Cl(2)) and transition metals, including copper (Cu) have been suggested to promote the formation of dioxin in incinerators, and sulphur (S) has been suggested to inhibit dioxin formation. We show that dioxin (PCDD and PCDF) emission factors from 17 different combustion categories are approximately linearly correlated with the average copper or chlorine content of the combusted material, and inverse linearly correlated with the average sulphur content of the material. Copper and chlorine are correlated and, thus cannot be distinguished. The analysis suggests that the wide range of dioxin emission factors could be explained by the content of sulphur and transition metals or chlorine in combusted materials.  相似文献

One way of computing the macroscopic behavior of a material sample with complex microstructure is to construct a finite element model based on a micrograph of a representative slice of the material. The quality of the results produced with such a model obviously depends on the quality of the constructed mesh. In this article, we describe a set of routines that modify and improve the quality of a 2D mesh. Most of the routines are guided by an effective element “energy” functional, which takes into account the shape quality of the elements and the homogeneity of the elements as determined from an underlying segmented image. The interfaces and boundaries in the image arise naturally from the segmentation process. From these routines, we construct a close-to-automatic mesh generator that requires only a few inputs, such as the linear sizes of the largest and smallest features in the micrograph.  相似文献

The synergy of the unique properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with the remarkable potential of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) provides an exciting opportunity for novel therapeutic modalities. However, little is known about the impact of CNT on hMSC behavior. We report the effect of CNT on hMSC renewal, metabolic activity, and differentiation. Furthermore, we tracked the intracellular movement of CNT through the cytoplasm to a nuclear location and assessed effects on cellular ultra structure.  相似文献
